Arthur Sweetser was born on July 16, 1888, in Boston, Mass., to M. Foster Sweetser and Edith Ashton Balch. Prepared at the Boston Latin School, he received his Harvard AB in 1911 and his AM in 1912. After graduation, Sweetser worked as a newspaper reporter. He married Ruth Gregory on Jun 19, 1915; together they had five children. During World War I, he served in the American Air Force.
